GUILTY GEAR Xrd REV 2 Introduction:

Guilty Gear Xrd  stands as a fighting video game sub-series created by Arc System Works, forming a part of the broader Guilty Gear series. This installment, Guilty Gear Xrd, underwent development utilizing Unreal Engine 3, incorporating cel-shaded graphics instead of the traditional hand-drawn sprites characteristic of the series. In alignment with the narrative from the previous game in the series, Guilty Gear 2: Overture, it introduced seven new characters.

The debut of the Xrd series, titled Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, first hit arcades on February 20, 2014, serving as the fifth primary installment. It subsequently became available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan and North America in December of the same year. European players gained access to a digital-only release in June 2015, with a Windows release via Steam following on December 9, 2015. The game garnered acclaim for its cel-shaded visuals and accessible gameplay, though it drew criticism for its non-interactive story mode and a relatively limited roster of characters.

Gameplay:

A sequel, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, emerged on consoles in May 2016 in Japan and June 2016 elsewhere, marking the sixth main installment. An update to Revelator, known as Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, was unveiled during Arc System Works Fighting Game Award 2016 on January 14, 2017. It hit arcades in March 2017, with versions for PS3, PS4, and PC releasing worldwide at the end of May 2017. A Rev 2 update patch was offered as paid DLC for those who owned Revelator on PlayStation Store or Steam. Additionally, the PS4 received an exclusive physical disc version.

In terms of gameplay, Guilty Gear Xrd employs a six-button layout, with five buttons responsible for various attacks (punch, kick, slash, heavy slash, and dust), and one dedicated to taunting or showing respect to the opponent. Combining two or three buttons can trigger additional techniques. A burst gauge fills over time or when the player sustains damage, enabling the execution of a Psych Burst to create distance from the adversary. This action also replenishes the tension gauge, which facilitates specific special attacks.

The game encompasses four primary modes: Network Mode, Practice Mode, Battle Mode, and Story Mode. Network Mode supports online matches through the PlayStation Network (PSN), complete with global rankings. Practice Mode includes a regular training mode, a tutorial mode for mastering basic controls, a mission mode simulating battle scenarios, and a challenge mode focused on executing combos.

Battle Mode consists of an arcade mode that reveals segments of the game's story following the defeat of eight opponents, a versus mode allowing offline battles with another player or a CPU, and a special "M.O.M" mode (Medal of Millionaires). M.O.M. Mode is a variation of the traditional survival mode, where players earn medals based on performance and advance through a progression system.

Final Words:

The final mode in Guilty Gear Xrd is Story Mode, introduced in this installment. This mode presents the entire game story in a cinematic, chapter-based format for uninterrupted viewing. Viewers have the ability to pause the movie at any point to explore a glossary of game terminology and plot elements, detailed in the library mode.

The storyline of Guilty Gear Xrd begins with Sign's arcade mode, with the first part focusing on Ramlethal Valentine's arc. The second part shifts to the console version's storyline after the capture of Ramlethal in Conclave, delving into Justice's arc and marking the beginning of Elphelt Valentine's narrative in the final chapter. In Revelator/Rev 2, the storyline centers around Elphelt Valentine and Jack-O's arc, following on from the conclusion of Sign's story mode on the console version.
